The national award was presented by Larry Richards and Gordon Read of the FAA at the Evergreen Aviation Museum on Friday June 30, 2006, at 10a.m. This distinguished honor follows three consecutive years of receiving the Diamond Certificate of Excellence Award, which is granted to employers who have at least 50 percent employee participation in the AMT awards program. "This is a very significant accomplishment," Larry Richards of the FAA told audience members at the museum. "[The Diamond Special Award] shows Evergreens commitment to providing training [for] maintenance personnel." According to the FAAs Gordon Read, only three other airlinesDelta, Horizon, and Frontierhave 100 percent participation in the AMT awards program. Twenty-eight EIA employees also earned individual AMT awards. These awards included 8 Bronze (6 hours of training), 4 Silver (12 hours of training), 12 Gold (26 hours of training), 3 Ruby (60 hours of training) and one Diamond (100 plus hours). The awards given are based on the hours accumulated over calendar year 2005. Wavell "Wave" Mead, a quality assurance auditor for EIA received the highest honor bestowed on technicians, the Diamond Award, by meeting the required training criteria as well as attending a college level course of at least three semester-hours. Mead has been attending Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Portland, which partnered with the Evergreen Aviation Museum on Jan. 9, 2006, to offer undergraduate and graduate degrees to Evergreen employees. Mead feels that the partnership between Embry Riddle and the museum will help qualify more people for the prominent Diamond Award and will allow others to more easily continue seeking educational advancements. The AMT Awards program is designed to encourage aviation maintenance technicians and their employers to take advantage of initial and regular recurrent training. The Diamond Award is given to companies that have their employees participate in such training, recognizing levels of advanced aircraft maintenance that extend beyond the FAAs compulsory requirements. The Diamond Special Award of Excellence is a testament to EIAs active encouragement of ongoing employee training in cooperation with the FAA.
